A Sustainable Farm

Green Acres Orchard & Ecolodge is a 16-acre organic fruit farm in Balik Pulau, Penang, Malaysia.

Sustainably farmed for the last 70 years, Green Acres does not use chemical fertilisers, pesticides or insecticides on the farm, minimising pollution to the surrounding environment. All produces are organically grown using own-made compost fertilizers. Committed to sustainable tourism, Green Acres offer farmstays in only 2 lodgings - a treehouse and a reassembled traditional (kampung) house (shown in above photo), using reclaimed materials to build and electricity generated by solar panels.

Year Round Fruits

Of the 800 fruit trees planted, half are non-seasonal, year round fruiting trees - jackfruit, pineapples, starfruit, papayas, bananas, ciku, umbra, calamansi lime to name a few. Along with them are heirloom nutmeg and clove trees, of which Penang is famous for. Wild herbs and edible weeds grow abundantly, most of which have medicinal healing properties and are known traditionally to help boost our immune system.

Durian Farm / Tropical Fruit Season (June - August)

Balik Pulau, the rural and rustic region at the heart of Penang island, is a reputed durian connoisseur's paradise. At Green Acres, we have over 450 matured durian trees with over 35 different durian varieties. Our matured durian trees, between 50-100+ years old, bear fruits which are exquisite in taste, like aged wine.

Durian Farm Tour and Durian Farm Stay

In durian season, we offer a farm tour with a durian tasting session. Guests visiting mid to late season (July-Aug) get to sample other tropical fruits like cempedak, mangosteens, rambutan, pulasan, langsat, duku langsat while enjoying the scenic views of orchard hills from our farm.

Those who book a farmstay either at the treehouse or main ecolodge with us get a better feel of what it is like to actually live in a fruit orchard with durians falling all around them, especially during the peak of the Balik Pulau durian season. And if their ears are up to it, they can get a long version of why we should live a more sustainable lifestyle, starting with the most basic of all needs - providing safe food for the family.
